Now, her daughters sleep in their own beds, their own rooms.
Their lunchboxes are full of homemade food. While they're at school, Shaima is working and studying to become a child psychologist.
When people have a stable home, they can rebuild their lives.

Shaima's family spent six stressful months in a motel, struggling to keep everyone fed without a proper kitchen. Her daughters would get scared and sleep on the floor, so she'd join them.
We met Shaima last year, when she connected with Launch Housing's Children's team. We swiftly got the family into secure housing, the girls into school—their lunchboxes full. On the day they moved in, Shaima felt the grey clouds above her head finally lift.
Today, Shaima studies in her lounge. She wants to become a psychologist for children who experience trauma. Her daughters can see that mum is happy because she dances in the kitchen.
Home is the foundation that makes everything else possible. But for thousands of people like Shaima, it's missing. We know that a home is more than a safe place to sleep—it’s the ability to move out of survival mode. With strong foundations, more people in our Melbourne community can rebuild their lives after homelessness.
Every year, more than 14,000 people across Melbourne turn to Launch Housing for support.
Our services are designed with frontline expertise, evidence-based research, and trauma-informed care.
