Here’s how you too can make the most profound difference

Here’s how you too can make the most profound difference – through a Gift in Your Will – just like Carol

People often ask if there is a ‘best’ type of gift they can leave in their Will. The best type is the one you want to give, and Launch Housing is grateful for any and all gifts. Every gift is a step towards ending homelessness.

Here are three options for including a gift in your Will.

Each of these ensures that the real dollar value of your gift is not eroded by inflation.

1. Wording for the residue of your estate
“I give and bequeath the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal to Launch Housing (ABN 20 605 113 595) 68 Oxford Street Collingwood Victoria for its general purposes, and declare that the receipt of an executive officer at the time, shall be sufficient discharge of my executor’s duties.”
2. Wording for a percentage of the residue of your estate
“I give and bequeath ____ percent of the residue of my estate both real and personal to Launch Housing (ABN 20 605 113 595) 68 Oxford Street Collingwood Victoria for its general purposes, and declare that the receipt of an executive officer at the time, shall be sufficient discharge of my executor’s duties.”
3. Wording for leaving a percentage of your entire estate
“I give and bequeath ____ percent of my estate both real and personal to Launch Housing (ABN 20 605 113 595) 68 Oxford Street Collingwood Victoria for its general purposes, and declare that the receipt of an executive officer at the time, shall be sufficient discharge of my executor’s duties.”

A solicitor is the best-placed person to discuss these options, and can talk you through the specifics of other types of common gifts in Wills.

Frequently Asked Questions about gifts in Wills

I’d like to include Launch Housing in my Will. Where do I begin?

By making your Will, if you haven’t already.

Or by changing your Will if you haven’t included a gift to Launch Housing …and you’d like to.

These first steps should be taken with the help of a solicitor. Please contact a solicitor, speak to them about your wishes, and they will guide you in what to do next. If you don’t have a solicitor, the Law Institute (or Society) in your State can refer you to one.

Can I look after my family and still leave a gift to Launch Housing?

You absolutely can, and we recommend that you do. We’re very much about families, and always encourage people to put their family first in their Will. It’s not uncommon to prioritise your loved ones with part of your assets, and to leave what’s left over through a ‘residuary’ gift.

Should I tell my family about a gift to Launch Housing?

Yes please. It helps if your family knows of your wishes and understands your motivations for including a charity. Some of our supporters have told us that telling their families about leaving a gift to Launch Housing was the start of a really lovely discussion – which even encouraged their children to start supporting their own charitable causes.

I may only have a modest gift to leave – does that matter?

Every gift to Launch Housing is appreciated, and makes a meaningful difference. You do not have to be wealthy for your gift to help enormously. Launch Housing supporters come from all walks of life and all backgrounds – and when added to the gifts of others, your gift will make a very big difference.

Can I leave you assets other than cash or items of significant value?

You can leave any kind of asset such as a house, a property, collectables (for example cars, stamp or coin collections, artworks, antiques, jewellery etc.) or shares.

Can I choose public acknowledgement – or not of my Gift?

Some people like to make a gift ‘In Memoriam’ to acknowledge a loved one. Some people are happy to be publicly acknowledged for their gift. Some choose to remain anonymous. No matter what your wishes are, they will be respected by Launch Housing.

Where does the money go?

We recommend that you leave the gift in your Will addressed to Launch Housing in general, so that it can be used where the need is greatest at that time.

Your gift could, for instance, go towards construction of new low-cost accommodation. It could help us hire more great staff to work on the frontline with individuals and families. It could help fund a new and innovative approach to ending homelessness. But no matter the particular program or item your gift buys, please know it will have a direct and powerful impact on people struggling to find and keep a place to call home.

Homelessness is not inevitable. With your help, we can end it.

It is absolutely possible to end homelessness by addressing each person’s unique needs while also pushing for overall systemic changes. Here’s how a Gift in your Will to Launch Housing can help achieve that:

Start with the unique needs of each person

The experience of homelessness is different for everyone. And so is Launch Housing’s response. We take the time to really understand what a person needs to change their circumstances, find a home, and stay in it. When solutions are the right fit, they have a better chance of success.

Change Australians’ attitudes to homelessness

Launch Housing advocates for the community on housing and housing affordability issues. We work to influence governments and policy, and we’re working to build the public’s understanding of homelessness and compassion for the people it affects.

Intervene early to prevent long-term homelessness

Many people become homeless because of a short-term difficulty such as a job loss or a family breakup. Launch Housing supports people in that situation so they can get back on their feet and avoid long-term homelessness.

Help people stay – so housing becomes home

We won’t end homelessness while there are still individuals and families who have to move constantly between short-term accommodation. Launch Housing support does not end when someone has a roof over their head. We stay with people until they can stay in their home.

Address underlying issues

Mental health issues, low literacy, the impact of childhood trauma – they’re all things that can lead a person to experience homelessness and keep them there. So when Launch Housing connects with a person, we try to understand and address these types of underlying issues.

Build more affordable housing

There’s just not enough affordable housing in Victoria, and we can’t end homelessness without homes. Launch Housing is working with governments and industry to encourage them to construct more of it. Instead of just waiting, we’re also building our own – and making it available to people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

If you believe in the power of a home to heal and support.

If you believe every person deserves a home.

If you believe we can and must end homelessness.

Then use a gift in your Will to help create powerful, permanent change.
