For years, Deborah hasn’t had a safe place to call home.
She didn’t plan to become homeless, yet due to tragic circumstances was homeless at 13. She spent the next four and half years living in an orphanage.
“I left [the orphanage] at 18 with no support and I’ve been homeless ever since. I was so traumatised. Without a home or family I could rely on I didn’t know where to go. I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere.
That time I spent at the orphanage, was the longest I’ve ever stayed in one place, after I lost my family. I was so lost.
Ever since then I’ve been searching. Searching for a place in the world, somewhere to feel safe, and somewhere to call home.”
Thousands of people in Australia live life like this, trapped by poverty, trauma and experience homelessness.
