Health and Wellbeing

Homelessness and health are inextricably linked, which is why we provide our clients access to integrated health and housing supports. Many people who use our services have multiple physical and mental health challenges which require on-going attention and care.

An internal review of the people who stayed in Launch Housing's crisis accommodation from 2016-2022 showed:

  • 84 per cent of people had both a mental illness and substance use disorder, often a result of experiencing trauma while homelesss,
  • 76 per cent had been the victim of violence while sleeping rough,
  • 52 per cent had a chronic illness, including Diabetes, dental disease and Hepatitis C, and
  • 15 per cent were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, despite making up just one per cent of the Victorian population.

An integrated health and homelessness response is critical to ending homelessness.

Nurses and Mental Health support

We have nurses and other health and AOD supports embedded into our core homelessness support services including the following sites:

  • Inner Melbourne Crisis Supported Accommodation – Southbank
  • Bob’s Place Crisis Supported Accommodation – Dandenong
  • Women Services – East St Kilda
  • Elizabeth Street Common Ground

On site clinical care makes healthcare more accessible to people who are using our services, and the following supports are provided:

Onsite AOD Support

  • AOD Case management
  • Harm Reduction education
  • Referrals to all AOD treatment modalities
  • Court support
  • Co-ordinating Opioid Replacement Therapy
  • Group information sessions
  • Managing the secondary NSP's
  • General onsite activities (such as cook-ups and coffee club)

Onsite nurse support

  • Access to primary health support including:

  • Addressing unmanaged chronic health conditions
  • Providing preventative healthcare services such as immunisation.
  • Healthcare promotions on relevant calendar days.

Our most effective programs are providing clients with much needed healthcare and wellbeing supports embedded into our core homelessness support services.

However, one of the most significant challenges we still face is access to appropriate, timely and ongoing mental health care for our clients. We continue to advocate for the people we work with so that their needs are taken into consideration as part of the mental health system reforms underway in Victoria.

We also measure and track wellbeing outcomes of clients in our programs. We use the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) tool to allow clients to self-identify their personal wellbeing, so that case managers can identify, tailor and coordinate their service needs.

Better Health and Housing Program

Integrated Housing and Health Support for a Brighter Future

The Better Health and Housing Program (BHHP) is an innovative initiative designed to transform lives by combining secure housing with comprehensive health support. Launched in August 2022 through a dynamic partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Brotherhood of St. Laurence, and Homes Victoria, BHHP is making significant strides in addressing chronic homelessness and complex health needs.

A Collaborative Effort for Meaningful Change

Our program is a testament to the power of collaboration. Since its inception, BHHP has supported over 70 ts, offering them a stable, socially engaging environment that empowers them to achieve their housing and health aspirations. By providing a secure base and expert care, we help our residents take crucial steps toward better health and wellbeing.

Remarkable Wellbeing Improvements

The impact of BHHP is evident in the improved wellbeing of our residents. Using the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI-A), residents with planned exits reported a substantial increase in their scores—from an average of 44.6 upon entry to an impressive 74 at exit. This brings them nearly on par with the Australian mean score of 75.3, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in enhancing quality of life.

Alleviating Pressure on the Healthcare System

Our early data reveals a remarkable impact on healthcare utilization. Residents in our program are four times less likely to visit the emergency department and three times less likely to need acute hospital admissions. This not only signifies better health outcomes for our residents but also eases the burden on the broader healthcare system.

Launch Housing is a place where people of diverse backgrounds, genders and sexual orientations are welcomed and supported.
