The Better Health and Housing Program (BHHP) is an innovative initiative designed to transform lives by combining secure housing with comprehensive health support. Launched in August 2022 through a dynamic partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Brotherhood of St. Laurence, and Homes Victoria, BHHP is making significant strides in addressing chronic homelessness and complex health needs.
Our program is a testament to the power of collaboration. Since its inception, BHHP has supported over 70 ts, offering them a stable, socially engaging environment that empowers them to achieve their housing and health aspirations. By providing a secure base and expert care, we help our residents take crucial steps toward better health and wellbeing.
The impact of BHHP is evident in the improved wellbeing of our residents. Using the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI-A), residents with planned exits reported a substantial increase in their scores—from an average of 44.6 upon entry to an impressive 74 at exit. This brings them nearly on par with the Australian mean score of 75.3, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in enhancing quality of life.
Our early data reveals a remarkable impact on healthcare utilization. Residents in our program are four times less likely to visit the emergency department and three times less likely to need acute hospital admissions. This not only signifies better health outcomes for our residents but also eases the burden on the broader healthcare system.
